TL;DR

No standard scale exists for measuring dynamic capabilities, limiting comparability of empirical findings and impairing data‑based theory development. This article develops a 14‑item scale based on Teece’s dynamic capability framework to assess sensing, seizing, and transforming capacities. The scale was created through a rigorous empirical procedure involving item generation, purification with 269 participants, and confirmation with 307 participants. The resulting scale shows high reliability and validity and predicts business and innovation performance.

Abstract

To date, no standard scale exists for measuring dynamic capabilities. This limits the comparability of empirical findings and impairs data-based theory development. This article presents the development of a 14-item scale based on Teece’s (2007, Strategic Management Journal, 28, 1319–1350) well-established dynamic capability framework, assessing sensing, seizing, and transforming capacities. It describes the rigorous empirical scale development procedure comprising the steps of (i) item generation, (ii) scale purification (n = 269), and (iii) scale confirmation (n = 307). The scale shows high reliability and validity and is a solid predictor of business and innovation performance.
