Abstract

This chapter contributes to a discussion of the shaping of learning processes in vocational education and training (VET) and human resource development (HRD) in the knowledge-based economy. A three-stage model of work-related learning based on practice and research is presented. The authors begin by defining professionals and learning professionals and then comparing professional learning with other forms of work-related learning. The three ways of learning, i.e. elaboration, expansion and externalisation, are then examined separately. Work-related learning is defined as involving: (1) elaborating on work competences by learning from and in practice; (2) expanding on theoretical knowledge and insight by learning explicitly from and in research; and (3) externalising innovations, building on practical and theoretical insights, and contributing to the development of the organisation and the profession. The final section of the chapter examines the three ways of learning collectively. Four hypotheses about collective learning are proposed.
