Abstract

Metacognition refers to understanding and controlling cognition. This article describes different kinds of metacognitive knowledge and how this knowledge relates to other cognitive skills such as strategy use and domain knowledge, as well as ability. The relative strengths and weaknesses of three instructional strategies for promoting metacognition among gifted and talented students are reviewed. Discussion also focuses on what kind of skills and strategies should be included in metacognitive instruction programs.
