Abstract

Abstract A method is described for the conversion of carbonyl compounds, which are present in very small concentrations in a light petroleum solution, into their 2,4‐dinitrophenylhydrazones. The light petroleum solution is passed through a column in which Celite acts as a carrier for 2,4‐dinitrophenyl‐ hydrazine hydrochloride. The carbonyl compounds then become almost quantitatively bound as 2,4‐dinitrophenylhydrazone. This same column can also be used for the decomposition of ozonized, unsaturated compounds, with the simultaneous formation of the dinitrophenylhydrazones of carbonyl fragments, so enabling the location of double bonds in minute amounts of material.
