Abstract

SEVERAL investigators have reported that animal feeds, and particularly animal feed constitutents of animal origin, frequently are contaminated with salmonellae. Pomeroy and Grady (1960), and other workers (Watkins et al., 1959; Grumbles and Flowers, 1961; Boyer et al., 1958; 1961) have adequately reviewed this subject, including the contamination of poultry feeds and feed ingredients. In spite of the numerous reports in the literature as to the high incidence of salmonellae in animal feed constituents the numbers of salmonellae, if present, are invariably low. Previous publications by Leistner et al. (1961), Niven (1962), Hansen et al. (1962), and Leistner et al. (1963) have emphasized that the most practical and economical method for preventing Salmonella recontamination in rendered animal by-products is to follow good sanitary and house-keeping procedures in the handling of rendered material.
