Abstract Engagement, broadly defined as involvement, satisfaction, and enthusiasm, is widely used by organizations and consultants for improving retention. However, engagement fails to meet many of the common criteria for positive organizational practice, i.e. theoretical, valid, unique, state‐like, and positive.
