The statistical power of research in the 1982-1984 volumes of the Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) was examined. The mean power figures to detect small, medium, and large population effect sizes (ES) were .25, .57, and .82, respectively. Given the nature of the nonexperimental designs of many strategic management studies, small size effects are especially representative of population ES and thus the above finding was considered serious. Recommendations to improve power analysis and reporting in strategic management research are offered.
