Abstract

This question is the title of a recent publication of the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) of the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences and certainly has relevance to every professional concerned with the nutritional health of Americans. As a result of the increasing knowledge on nutrition and health, and concern raised in some quarters over the recommended daily allowance values for certain nutrients published in the 11th edition (1989), FNB determined that it was time to reexamine the conceptual framework on which the RDAs had been set for 50 years.
