Abstract

This chapter will explore why big ideas have become a topic of interest in mathematics education, what these might look like in relation to the teaching and learning of number in the early to the middle years of schooling, and how these are reflected in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. In particular, it will consider those ideas and strategies without which student's progress in mathematics will be seriously impacted.
