Relationship of Empty Body Weight to Carcass Weight in Beef Cattle

The relationship between empty body weight and carcass weight was determined for 99 Hereford steers ranging in empty body weight from 190 to 450 kilograms. The regression equation obtained was compared with the equations reported by Lofgreen et al. (1962), Garrett and Hinman (1969) and Holzer and Levy (1969). The results indicate that empty body weight can be accurately calculated from carcass weight with the expression Y = 1.40 × + 40.2 where Y = empty body weight and × = chilled carcass weight. The use of this equation to determine final empty body weight for use in calculating live weight gains should overcome some of the error due to variation in weight of the fill in the digestive tract.
