Abstract

Fig ( Ficus caricaL.) is one of the most important fresh and dried fruits for both consumers and food industry throughout world and isproducedina limitednumber ofcountries. As a leader producerin the world, Turkey has importa nt fig genetic resources as well. However in most parts of the country, in particular coastal regions, local figgenotypesare continuouslysubjected togenetic erosionand therefore,it is necessary to determine, collect, describe and also to maintain them in situandex situ. This study we aimedtoevaluate local fig germplasm in Alanya and Kemerdistricts in Mediterranean regionofTurkey.Theresults showedthat theinvestigatedpomologicaltraitsof figgenotypes display ed significant differences within both districts .Figsamplescollected fromAlanya are more suitable for makingmarmalade and jam because they had relativelysmall fruits, while figs sampled fromKemer are generally considered goodas fresh consumption due to their relativelybigfruitsize. Thesevaluablefig genetic resources are under in-situconservation to use infuturebreeding programmes.
