Abstract The components of the essential oil from the leaves of Eruca sativa were analysed by capillary GC and GC–MS. The essential oil from the leaves of Eruca sativa was found to contain 67 volatile components, representing 96.52% of the oil, which were characterized. The main constituents were 4‐methylthiobutylisothiocyanate (60.13%) and 5‐methylthiopentanonitrile (11.25%). The essential oil from the leaves of E. sativa was characterized by a high content of sulfur‐ and nitrogen‐containing compounds. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
