ABSTRACT Assimilation of nutrients from compounded diets by the prawns Palaemon serratus and Pandalus platyceros was studied. Values for the assimilation of total nitrogen by P. serratus from rations containing 60% of different food meals of animal and vegetable origin ranged from 79.6% for whale‐meat meal to 95.1% for B.P. protein concentrate. Mean assimilation from three diets containing 60% of different commercial fish meals was 89.0%. At dietary levels of 47.5% the carbohydrates wheat starch, glycogen and dextrin were completely assimilated by P. serratus and potato starch was 90.6% assimilated. Fewer determinations were made with P. platyceros but results suggested that it assimilated nutrients slightly less efficiently than P. serratus.
