Availability of prerequisite concepts for learning biology at certificate level

The application of a five-level development scheme in order to ascertain pupil attainment of four concepts considered to be prerequisite to an understanding of photosynthesis at certificate level is described. Results indicate widespread deficiencies associated with these prerequisite concepts. The implications for learning of complex concepts in biology are considered.
