Abstract

This is the first edition of<i>Liver and Biliary Diseases</i>, a multiauthored text edited by Neil Kaplowitz, MD. As such, it joins a prestigious library of other textbooks in this rapidly evolving field. What is it, therefore, that sets this book apart from the others? Although<i>Liver and Biliary Diseases</i>is comprehensive, at 732 pages it is considerably more concise and readable than many of the other more exhaustive texts. It is primarily aimed at a general audience of physicians in training, internists, and gastroenterologists, but even hepatologists may find the many tables and graphics useful for quick reference. Among the most attractive features of the book is way each chapter is formatted. Within each subsection, important facts are highlighted in bold print to facilitate quick review. The reference section at the end of each chapter contains an annotated bibliography of only the most important works and review articles, rather
