Curves of Growth for Reflection Spectra Uesugi, Akira ; Irvine, William M. Abstract Basic formulae are derived for the computation of the line profile and equivalent width of an absorption line formed by reflection from a thick planetary atmosphere for an arbitrary single-scattering phase function. The method of successive scattering (Neumann series) is used; rapid convergence is achieved even for conservative scattering through use of an asymptotic expression valid for large orders of scattering. Limiting formulae valid for very weak and very strong lines, and for large and small continuum absorption, are obtained. The formulae are applied to the case of a Lorenta line profile, and numerical results are obtained for isotropic scattering.
