The National Art Education Association's Standards for Art Teacher Preparation Programs (1979) were used to develop a questionnaire which was sent to higher education faculty in the United States and Canada. The data collected were used to determine how closely art teacher preparation programs are complying with these curriculum standards. With regard to compliance, a great divergence was found to exist in many programs, particularly in the number of semester hours required in the art history and advanced work components. In addition, a majority of the programs were found to require fewer art credits than the 51 semester hours recommended by the NAEA.
