Translation of Cultural Taboos in Hollywood Movies in Professional Dubbing and Non-professional Subtitling

Abstract

The current study, as an initial attempt in the Iranian context, aimed at: 1) exploring applied translation strategies in both versions of translations and their justification and 2) investigating the favorable translation by professional and non-professional translators. In so doing, two Hollywood movies and their translations were chosen. The results obtained from Chi-square test confirmed a significant difference with respect to totally nine translation strategies for both samples. The results emerged from semi-structured interviews revealed that professional translators preferred edited and filtered and non-professional translators chose exact and free translation.
