Abstract

TRANSIENT jaundice occasionally appears after a surgical procedure, usually an operation for an abdominal problem. In such cases very little is known about the anatomic changes in the liver or their pathogenesis.1 A series of cases of benign postoperative jaundice occurring almost in epidemic proportions at the University of Zurich Hospital provided an opportunity for study of this phenomenon. Within an eight-month period (September, 1962, through May, 1963) 11 cases of postoperative jaundice were observed, and a twelfth case was added to the total thereafter.
