Abstract

Isolations of salmonellae from animal feedstuffs, particularly those produced by inedible rendering plants, have been widely reported (1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10). At present the role of this contamination in the pathogenesis of animal salmonellosis is not well defined; a more important aspect, however, is the possibility that it results in an increased human exposure. That the incidence of passive carriers would be augmented by feeding such material to livestock seems plausible. This, in turn, could cause increased salmonella contamination in foodprocessing industries, with the result that the opportunity for spread of these organisms to humans would be greatly facilitated.
