This paper presents the research work conducted to study the ability of a large receiver aircraft with two difierent size and three difierent mass conflgurations to maneuver and maintain contact position behind a KC-135 tanker in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. An LQR controller was used for the inner loop control system. The ∞ight track that was simulated was taken from 2004 testing of a Learjet behind a KC-135 that was part of the AFRL AAR program and includes signiflcant winds at altitude.
