Over the past decades the educational scene has changed in several respects. One of the main transformations has to do with the continued expansion of enrolment in education observed around the globe (United Nations, 2010). As educational coverage rates increased, greater proportions of socially disadvantaged students (those who used to be excluded) have been incorporated into the education system. This is with no doubt an important achievement in terms of equality of access to education; but at the same time, poses significant challenges for equity and quality of education.
