Service-learning, which engages students and universities in community building, has strong potential for advancing library and information science (LIS) education. Advantages include increased student learning, extended collaboration, decreased isolation, and promotion of the common good. Examples of service learning projects in LIS education offer models for imitation. Fieldwork offers opportunities for integrating service learning into the curriculum. LIS professors engaged in teaching which qualifies as service-learning should forge alliances with others involved in service-learning on their own and other campuses.
