Medicinal plants constitute an effec tive source of traditional and modern medicines. Traditional system of medicine enlightened the importance of Datura fastuosa Linn (Solanaceae) to have a great medicinal value. The roots, dried leaves and flowering tops have been used in India for their na rcotic and antispasmodic properties in the treatment of numerous ailments and conditions. The juice of fresh leaves, or a poultice of them, is used to relieve painful swellings earache. The seeds and root possess antidiarrhoeal, antipyretic properties and are used to treat insanity and fever. The present paper enlightens the chemical profile and pharmacological potential of D . fastuosa and encourages the traditional use to find new therapeutic effects, but under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.
