Heights and weights were measured in 800 underfives in Eastern Rwanda. 247 (31 %) were stunted and 12 (1.5%) were wasted. Stunting appeared to be due to inadequate breast feeding and weaning foods. We suggest failure to measure children's height leads to an underestimate of malnutrition in the Third World Countries, and we provide evidence to support the value of specially prepared weaning supplements.
