Abstract

Abstract The green luminescence of different preheated ZnO powders is measured. From the variation of the intensity and the shift of the maximum to longer wavelengths with temperature, a new model for the activator centre is proposed. It is accepted that the activator level is due to an absorbed O − ion and lies 0.8 eV below the conduction band. The trapped electron may recombine with a positive hole in the valence band or in a b centre.
