A chemical study of <i>lupinus hispanicus</i> seed—nutritional components

Abstract

Abstract Ecotypes of the native Spanish species Lupinus hispanicus were analysed for seed nutrient composition. Comparisons were made between the two subspecies (ssp hispanicus (Boiss et Reut) and ssp bicolor (Merino)). Other Lupinus species were also analysed. The seed protein content of Lupinus hispanicus is fairly high (420 g kg −1 ), and the tryptophan content is higher than that of other species (15–20 g kg −1 ). The oil content (30 g kg −1 ) is lower than that of Lupinus mutabilis and Lupinus albus . Of the sterols, β‐sitosterol and campesterol are high and cholesterol is low. The mineral content was similar for all species studied but some ecotypes of L hispanicus had high values of Mn though much lower than L albus (361 and 2396 mg kg −1 , respectively).
