Abstract

A study has been made of the permeability of organic vapours through coextruded polypropylene packaging film. The relative magnitude of the permeation coefficient of each vapour studied has been shown to be related to its molecular volume and its boiling point. Equations have been developed which allow accurate calculation of permeation coefficients relating to coextruded polypropylene using basic molecular data for homologous series of alkanes, alcohols and esters. Results obtained using other test vapours indicate that the relationships could hold for a wide range of organic compounds.
