Abstract The chemical interfacial reaction between silicon carbide and transition metals (Ti, Fe, Ni, (Fe, Ni)‐alloys) has been studied in order to better understand the reaction mechanism taking place and model it using the available thermodynamics and kinetics data of the reacting systems. Titanium silicide and titanium carbide have been identified by microprobe, X‐ray techniques and scanning electron microscopy as being phases resulting of the reaction between silicon carbide and titanium. In the same way, reaction between SiC and nickel yields nickel silicides and graphite, whereas the reaction between SiC and iron leads to the build‐up of silicon rich alloys and graphite.
