Abstract

EVIDENCE for a growth promoting factor(s) in soybean oil meal has been indicated by Savage et al. (1950), Hill and Briggs (1950), and by Patrick (1953). More recently, Kratzer et al. (1958, 1959), and Vohra et al. (1959), have studied the growth response of poults to a methanol extract of soybean oil meal. A large difference in growth rate of poults was noted at this station between diets having isolated soybean protein as protein source and diets having soybean oil meal as protein source. It was found that a water extraction of soybean oil meal would remove material which would increase the growth rate of poults when used as a supplement to isolated soybean protein diets. Studies of the water extracted material are reported in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE (a) General. Day old poults of either Broad Breasted Bronze (BBB), Beltsville Small White (BSW) or Large White varieties were used …
