Abstract The general principles of leaf analysis and the factors influencing leaf composition are reviewed briefly. Methods of leaf sampling, including a statistical analysis of the method used at Long Ashton, are described. The overall sampling error, expressed as the coefficient of variation, is of the order of 6%, of which about I‐2 occurs at the analytical stage. Analytical methods are given for determining total N, P, K, Ca and Mg in leaf dry matter.
