The theory of the isothermal Hall effect is re-examined taking into account the finite dimension of the specimen in the direction of the Hall e.m.f. This involves consideration of concentration gradients, space charges, recombination processes and floating potentials at the Hall electrodes. The analysis leads to recommendations concerning experimental technique.
