Getting a complex. A novel colorimetric screen has been developed for detecting the activity of lipases and esterases in microtitre-plate (MTP) format. Hydrolase-catalyzed hydrolysis of dimedone esters of carboxylic acids yielded dimedone that formed a soluble green complex (λmax=417 nm) in the presence of copper(II) acetate and DMSO, see scheme.
