Summary The possible mutagenic activity of twney‐five cosmetic ingredients was investigated using the Salmonella histidine auxotrophs hisTA98, hisTA100, his TA1535, hisTA1537 and hisTA1538. All twenty‐five cosmetic ingredients were subjected to the spot test, a qualitative form of the Salmonella/microsome test. Nine of the twenty‐five cosmetic ingredients demonstrated potential mutagenicity in the spot testing and were further examined in plate incorporation tests, a quantitative form of the Salmonella/microsome test. Only one tested cosmetic ingredient, DEA Laureth Sulfate, gave positive mutagenic results in the plate incorporation test.
