Flaxseed is an oilseed that contains 41% fat, 28% dietary fiber, and 21% protein. Flaxseed is low in saturated fat, moderate in monounsaturated fat, and high in polyunsaturated fat. It is likely the richest source of the essential omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, in the North American diet. Flaxseed is also rich in plant lignans. Many of flaxseed's health effects are attributed to its alpha-linolenic acid, lignan, and fiber components.
