The uses of optical gratings in linear and radial measurement are reviewed historically. They are shown to involve a 'self-improving' principle which is applied to the generation of the gratings themselves and to the transducers used in reading them. Accurate automatic measurement is thus made available to a wide range of laboratory and engineering applications.
