ABSTRACT The secretory structures for bioactive compounds in Hypericum perforatum L., a herbaceous perennial plant known for anti-inflammatory and healing properties, are distributed throughout the plant leaves and consist of translucent, schizogenous oil cavities and black nodules. Nodules are differentiated during early leaf growth and are initially formed at the edges and tip of young emerging leaves. This study investigated the anatomical, ultrastructural, and cytochemical characteristics of Hypericum perforatum leaf nodules to determine the localization of active compounds.
