The energy splitting of two GaAs quantum wells coupled through a thin AlAs barrier (3--4 atomic layers) has been observed by resonant tunneling spectroscopy for the first time. The experimental result can be interpreted with calculations made by taking a \ensuremath{\Gamma} point for the AlAs barrier height and the envelope-function approximation.
