The Mn-doped spinel MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ has been spectroscopically investigated in view of the potential use as a short-wavelength solid-state laser. The very small absorption and emission cross sections imply a high Mn concentration, but the measured excited state absorption (ESA) at the emission wavelength will prevent laser action of this material.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
