Abstract

INTRODUCTION HOLMES et al. (1939) noted little correlation between the ascorbic acid content of plasma and egg production, body weight, food intake or age of the hen. Satterfield et al. (1945) injected hens subcutaneously with ascorbic acid and measured changes in plasma ascorbic acid with time. Plasma levels were highest 25 minutes after injection and returned to basal values in 24 hours. Satterfield et al. (1947) reported on the effect of subcutaneous injections of ascorbic acid on the concentration of reduced ascorbic acid in liver, lung, kidney, spleen, adrenal and heart of mature hens. Liver and kidney of the injected birds had lower concentrations of reduced ascorbic acid than control hens, while spleen and heart muscle did not appear to be influenced by exogenous ascorbic acid. Dietary supplementation of ascorbic acid to laying hens has produced variable and inconsistent results on hen performance. Thornton and Moreng (1958, 1959) reported a…
