The diagnostic significance of urate crystals in the synovial fluid of gouty patients has been stressed (1-3) and their probable relationship to the acute inflammatory reaction of gouty arthritis demonstrated (4, 5). McCarty, Kohn, and Faires (6) have also described crystals of calcium pyrophosphate in synovial fluid of patients with chondrocalcinosis or pseudogout. It has been shown that these latter crystals can...References1. MCCARTYHOLLANDER DJJL: The identification of urate crystals in gouty synovial fluid. Ann. Intern. Med. 54: 452, 1961.
