Abstract

This article examines unionization trends and outcomes among graduate students: where and why graduate students have organized and whether unionization has affected student-mentor relationships. It draws upon archival data, including all existing contracts negotiated by unions representing graduate students, and interviews with administrators, faculty, and union leaders from organized institutions. The conclusion addresses several implications such as institutional and departmental autonomy, student-mentor relationships, and labor relations outcomes.
