For two strains of B, cereus nisin was highly effective against spores of B. cereus-7, but only slightly so against spores of B. cereus-1 when L-alanine was present in the system. Furthermore, with B. cereus-7 the initial effectiveness of nisin was enhanced when 5-alanine was added prior to the antibiotic. However, at 24 hr incubation, the total sporicidal effect was the same regardless of the time of addition of nisin and alanine.
