Summary An investigation into the mechanism leading to the development of acquired B antigens is described. Serological evidence is given to suggest that a T activating bacterial filtrate containing an additional enzyme able to produce weak B antigens in O and A red cells in vitro does so by reacting with basic non‐specific group substance within the cells. Human serum has a strong inhibitory effect on the T activating principle of the filtrate but does not inhibit the B producing principle. The results of tests with various saliva samples are also described.
