Abstract The essential oil of Calendula officinalis L. was obtained in low yield (0.3 %) by steam distillation with cohobation from flowers and whole plants. Sixty‐six components were identified by GC‐MS, mainly sesquiterpene alcohols: α‐cadinol was the main constituent (about 25%). The essential oil from the whole plant differed from that of the flowers by the presence of monoterpene hydrocarbons in addition to the alcohols.
