Abstract

Abstract Deacetonation of the crystalline monomer, 1.2:3.4‐di‐ O ‐isopropylidene‐6‐ O ‐methacryloyl‐α‐ D ‐galactopyranose(DGM, I) in 80% formic acid solution at 20°C gave the syrupy, water‐soluble monomer 6‐ O ‐methacryloyl‐α‐ D ‐galactopyranose (α‐GM) was a white crystalline compound which showed characteristic infrared absorption. The NMR spectrum of α‐GM in deuterium oxide was complicated by two variable: (i) mutarotation and (ii) gradual polymerisation. Syrupy GM was polymerised with ammonium persulphate to a water‐insoluble, cross‐linked hydrogel.
