A method based on bounded real lemma is presented for designing observer-based proper reduced-order H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> compensators. The proposed compensators are shown to include the strictly proper full-order central H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> compensators as a special class. A compensator design algorithm along with a numerical example is included to illustrate the use of the proposed compensator design equations.
