Self-advocacy

Self-advocacy is the academic concept and research domain concerned with the processes by which individuals effectively communicate, assert, and act on behalf of their own rights, needs, interests, and preferences. It investigates the strategies, skills, and contextual factors enabling individuals, particularly those who may face systemic barriers or marginalization, to influence decisions affecting their lives and environments. Key characteristics include the development of communicative competence, decision-making capacity, and the assertion of agency. The significance of self-advocacy as a research concept lies in its contribution to understanding empowerment, promoting autonomy, and informing practices aimed at enhancing social inclusion and equity across diverse populations and settings.
