Free Energy

Free Energy is a thermodynamic potential that combines a system’s energetic and entropic contributions into a single state function—typically as Helmholtz free energy (F = U − TS) at constant temperature and volume or Gibbs free energy (G = H − TS) at constant temperature and pressure—such that its decrease quantifies the maximum useful non-expansion work obtainable and determines the direction of spontaneous processes and equilibrium in biomolecular, chemical, and materials systems.
