Breeding is a nuclear process occurring within specific reactor systems where fissile isotopes are produced from fertile isotopes through neutron capture and subsequent radioactive decay. This concept and methodology in nuclear engineering investigates and characterizes the efficiency of converting fertile material into nuclear fuel, the required neutronics for sustainment or net production, and the design parameters of reactors capable of achieving this transformation, thereby significantly extending the potential global nuclear fuel supply and impacting fuel cycle strategies.
